Meerkat Vision

Meerkat is dedicated to encouraging a web industry that embraces the principles of sustainability in a meaningful and measurable way, which will prove faster than industries such as mining, retail, manufacturing or pharmaceuticals ever did. We believe this will happen because

web people are inherently driven by their desire to change the world
young people, who are the most prolific users of the web, are deeply socially motivated
investors and Shareholders and increasingly realising that sustainable businesses also mean reliable long-term investments
sustainability issues are going to define the 21^st Century

We believe, in short, that the web industry will be more successful because of the way it embraces sustainability.

This is online social innovation with real measurement and real meaning.

Meerkat is dedicated to encouraging measurable and meaningful online social innovation through:

Web industry collaboration on the negative impacts, without needing to be motivated by the threat of innovation-stifling regulation or negative press
Web industry competition for the most positive social innovation delivered through their financially successful services and businesses.
A fair and transparent measurement of impact which is meaningful to society and to the web industry’s financial success

I spotted the following as a link from the BBC Technology page: http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/doc/2007/11/25/time-to-write-our-own-rules/ I think this dovetails in nicely with your thinking, the need for the social web to create and maintain new rules, new terms of reference even, is clearly there.

Thanks! This is useful! We also had some feedback that said we needed to be clearer on the "why" for Meerkat. Here's our one-liner vision:

Our vision is a web industry that self regulates around social impact whilst not stifling innovation.
